Effect of Alkaline Preflush in an Alkaline-Surfactant-Polymer Flood

Abstract: An ultralow interfacial tension alkali-surfactant-polymer formulation was developed for a sandstone reservoir. Phase behavior was studied with the reservoir oil at different water−oil ratios and varying salt/alkali concentrations. The rheology of the resulting microemulsion phases was measured with and without polymers. The surfactant formulation was tested with a field core and an out-crop core, with and without an alkaline preflush. Waterflood recovered about 48% of the oil in place and reduced the oil satur… Show more

“…Before surfactant flooding, apreflush is injected to precondition the reservoirs. This preflush contains sacrificial agents such as Sodium Tripolyphoshate (Enordet, 2013).The alkaline preflush increases the core salinity to the optimum salinity of the surfactant formulation before the surfactant slug (Krishna et al, 2013).Fresh water can also be injected to change salinity and hardness of the formation brine. This helps to reduce the adsorption of surfactant to rock surfaces.…”

“…It enhances the volumetric sweep efficiency which causes more oil to be displaced to the surface. Polymer injection does not reduce the residual oil saturation but enables us to reach it more quickly and economically by reducing water production (Krishna et al, 2013). They are known as mobility controller for Enhanced Oil Recovery.…”

“…[19][20][21] Similarly, the diffusion of chromium ions in the gelant is also greatly affected by the polymer. Bryant et al 22 held that chromium loss was more critical in matrix formations than in fractured reservoirs because of the high surface area of rock in contact with the gelant.…”
