Effect of anesthesia and surgery on immunity

Abstract: The observed phenomenon that multiple distant metastases may appear and grow rapidly after operation on the primary cancer is very distressing. Many experimental results suggest that surgical procedures may precipitate dissemination and growth of tumor in some instances, but the overwhelming evidences document that surgical reduction of tumor bulk can achieve cure for the host and restore the immunity lost in the face of growing tumors. Various anesthetics were shown to interfere with many phases of the immune… Show more

“…It is accepted that these inhalation anaesthetic agents depress many aspects of the immune response ( 1 , 2 ) such as phagocytosis (3,4), lymphocyte transformation ( 5 , 8 ) , antibody production ( 9 ) , chemotaxis (l0,ll) and diminish resistance to infection and the development of neoplasia (12,13). However, the negative findings for halothane and nitrous oxide were reported by some authors (14)(15)(16)(17).…”

“…Patients having undergone surgery under general anesthesia are known to be susceptible to postoperative infections and sepsis (1)(2)(3)(4). Although the surgical procedure per se is likely to increase the probability of exposure to pathogenic microorganisms, the anesthetic drugs might contribute to the infective process by affecting the immune system.…”

“…Extensive clinical and experimental evidence indicates that tumor removal adversely alters the growth kinetics of residual neoplasia (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). Tumor cell proliferation is increased in local tumor recurrences following curative-intent excisional surgery (3,7).…”
