Effect of antipsychotics on community structure in functional brain networks

Abstract: Schizophrenia, a mental disorder that is characterized by abnormal social behavior and failure to distinguish one's own thoughts and ideas from reality, has been associated with structural abnormalities in the architecture of functional brain networks. Using various methods from network analysis, we examine the effect of two classical therapeutic antipsychotics -Aripiprazole and Sulpiride -on the structure of functional brain networks of healthy controls and patients who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia.… Show more

“…A possible confounding factor might be the medication of the patients. It cannot be excluded that psychiatric medications (present in 16 out of 23 patients) might have their effects through network reorganization in the brain ( Flanagan et al, 2019 ). Second, the presence of comorbid disorders limits the specificity of our results, although most patients with BPD have additional conditions of Axis I disorders ( Leichsenring et al, 2011 ).…”

“…However, very few graph-theoretic studies have been conducted into the effect of antipsychotic medication, or indeed any drug for any brain disorder, on this network organization. The ones that have been conducted found measurable drug effects (17, 18, 47, 48) [including converse to treatment, inducing psychosis (49)]. We hypothesized that a drug designed to treat schizophrenia would modify the brain connectivities of patients, making them more similar to those of healthy individuals.…”

“…If the edge ij is present in both graphs then a ij b ij = 1, while this product is zero otherwise. One can prove that the following function is a distance [19]:…”
