Effect of applying electrical potential to a CO2 laser welding of different thickness plates

Abstract: This study was aimed at developing laser welding with an applied voltage potential to increase the bead root width in laser welding. Also, in order to enhance the welding speed and the butt joint gap tolerance, the influences of the experimental conditions: supplied voltage between plate and backside electrode, welding speed, plasma operate gaseous species, and the butt joint gap, on the bead root width were investigated. Although it is necessary to avoid over heating and melting the plates, it is applicable f… Show more

“…LP plates have advantages, such as weight savings, welds in areas with less load, fewer welded joints (as shown in Figure ), the avoidance of expensive bolted joints, and savings in the cost of fabrication, lower maintenance costs, and optimizing the matching of steel cross section to actual stresses. TRBs are used instead of the tailor welded blanks (TWB) to manufacture automobiles, and when compared to TWB, TRB has advantages such as without a sudden change in thickness making special demands on mold due to a welding seam, improvement of safety, good energy absorption in the transition region.…”

“…Welding speed is the parameter that most significantly influences the weld bead dimensions. Hamatani et al (2005) studied the CO 2 laser welding of mild steel SS45 with a thickness of 0.8, 2.0, or 3.2 mm with TIG used for applying the voltage potential to increase the bead root width. It was also investigated enhancement of the welding speed and the butt joint gap tolerance and the influences of the experimental conditions such as: supplied voltage between plates and backside electrode, welding speed, plasma operates gaseous species, and the butt joint gap on the bead root.…”
