Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the acclimatization of micropropagated banana plantlets

Abstract: The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on micropropagated banana plantlets was evaluated during the acclimatization period. Plants were inoculated with Acaulospora scrobiculata, Glomus elarum or Glomus etunicatum. After cultivation in a greenhouse for 3 months, height, leaf area, fresh weight and dry matter of root and shoots, levei of AMF colonization, nutrient levei, photosynthesis and transpiration rate, water potential and stomatal conductance were measured. The number of AMF spores produced in e… Show more

“…The results suggest an interaction between substrate composition, fertilisation and AMF inoculation, as previously reported for micropropagated woody plants (Estaún et al, 1999), since G. deserticola and G. intraradices only improved growth of plants previously cultivated with lower amounts of fertiliser in high-and lowpeat substrates, respectively. Differences in growth promotion of micropropagated plants have been reported for different species of perennial plants (e.g., Monticelli et al, 2000;Taylor and Harrier, 2000;Yano-Melo et al, 1999). Main stem and lateral branch growth was also differentially affected by substrates and AMF inoculation.…”

“…Several researchers showed that mycorrhizal application significantly increased the leaf area in comparison with that of without mycorrhizal application (Al-Karaki & Clark, 1999;Melo et al, 1999;Gomez et al, 1999;Miranda et al, 2011). Besides the influence of mycorrhiza, the sugarcane leaf area is determined by genetic factors of clone.…”
