Effect of atmospheric transmittance on performance of adaptive SPD-vacuum switchable glazing

Abstract: Combined suspended particle device (SPD)-vacuum glazing is a potential adaptive glazing for low energy building application. Glazing transmission is an essential parameter to determine indoor comfort level of building due to glazing. In this work, above 0.5 clearness index, a strong correlation between glazing transmission and clearness index (Atmospheric transmission) has been evaluated for south facing vertical plane glazing. Below 0.5 clearness index, isotropic diffuse transmittance was dominant and one sin… Show more

“…Windows are one of the weakest components in a building. It allows external heat to come inside (enhance the air condition load), internal heat to outside (enhance heating load) and offer visual connection to building interior to exterior [172][173][174][175][176][177][178][179][180][181][182][183][184][185]. Building window systems are affected by an overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value) and solar energy transmittance (g-value) [186][187][188][189].…”

“…These glazing can be electrically, thermally, or chemically actuated. Electrical actuation of switchable glazings EC, SPD, and LC gives control of the switchability of glazing [30][31][32][33][34]. EC glazing changes its transparency from transparent to opaque state in the presence of direct current power supply.…”

“…Electrically actuated switchable material filled double glazings in such large façade applications offer better control when compared with non-electrically activated switchable glazing. In additions, electrically actuated switchable glazings  offer more than one transmittance and intermittence transmittance by applying variable power [6][7][8][9];  can control glare [7][8][9][10];  provide daylight where spectrum has a positive influence on occupant comfort [8][9][10];  can be powered by connected with PV [11][12][13][14][15];  addition with vacuum glazing [16][17][18] electrically activated glazing can form a low heat loss switchable glazing [19][20][21][22][23][24][25];…”

“…Theoretically, the relation between glazing transmission and clearness index was investigated for selected European locations and surface orientations by Waide and Norton [53]. Experimentally correlations between SPD glazing [54], vacuum glazing [17] and SPD-vacuum glazing [19] with clearness index had also been investigated.…”
