Influence of atmospheric clearness on PDLC switchable glazing transmission

Abstract: 1 Highlights: Correlation between PDLC glazing transmittance and sky clearness index has been calculated.  Transmitted solar energy and SHGC were evaluated for different clearness index.  Single glazing transmittance was recommended for different azimuthal orientation of vertical plane PDLC glazing. ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPTA C C E P T E D M A N U S C R I P T Abstract:Electrically activated switchable polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) is suitable for adaptive windows. A particular type requires 20V to beco… Show more

“…Windows are one of the weakest components in a building. It allows external heat to come inside (enhance the air condition load), internal heat to outside (enhance heating load) and offer visual connection to building interior to exterior [172][173][174][175][176][177][178][179][180][181][182][183][184][185]. Building window systems are affected by an overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value) and solar energy transmittance (g-value) [186][187][188][189].…”

“…The transmitted sunlight through the transparent or semi-transparent window of a building significantly influences on the visual comfort of building occupant. Besides PCE, there are some other crucial parameters such as average visible transmittance (AVT), transparency colour perception [134][135][136], corresponding colour temperature (CCT) [137,138] and colour rendering index (CRI) [139] should be investigated for optimizing the semi-transparent PSCs. Usually, AVT range between 20%-30% is required for window applications.…”

“…Switchable and non-switchable are the two available types of window systems. Switchable windows are smart window type which have more than one transparency and can be modulated based one electrical and thermal impulse [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Non switchable advanced windows are primarily for cold climate dominated aerogel and vacuum glazing and hot climate dominated PV window [17].…”
