Effect of auxins on adventitious rooting from stem cuttings of candidate plus tree Pongamia pinnata (L.), a potential biodiesel plant

Abstract: Pongamia pinnata, commercially important tree species used to produce biofuels, is known for its multipurpose benefits and its role in agro-forestry. Present study examines the amenability of vegetative propagation and effect of maturation in candidate plus tree P. pinnata through rooting of stem cuttings treated with varying concentrations and combinations of auxins. The performance of the cuttings was evaluated using SAS GLM software and the data were analyzed as a one-way classified data with and without su… Show more

“…We also found that 1.3 µM NAA alone or combined with 5 µM IAA, applied during 7-day induction phase, significantly enhanced rooting efficiency of the difficult-to-root cultivars, 'Free Redstar' and 'Pinova'. Similar synergistic effect of auxin combinations (IBA+IAA or NAA+IAA) on rooting was reported for rooting of Pongamia pinnata cuttings [Kesari et al 2009]. …”

“…1f). The significance of IBA for the development of adventitious root has already been shown in karanja by many earlier workers (Manoj et al 2009;Sugla et al 2007;Kesari et al 2009Kesari et al & 2012Shrivastava and Kant 2010).…”

“…There is substantial evidence that auxins contribute to adventitious root initiation in cuttings excised from plants (Osterc et al 2009;Overvoorde et al 2010). Auxins are known to increase the number of roots per cutting besides enhancing the rate of root development (Kesari et al 2009). In the present study, the potential of aeroponic system for adventitious rooting (Fig.…”

“…Mass vegetative multiplication of elite genotypes can offer quick productive gains (Kesari et al 2009). Adventitious root formation (ARF) is a key step in vegetative propagation of woody or economically important species and the problems associated with rooting of cuttings frequently cause economic losses (de Klerk et al 1999).…”
