This study aimed to evaluate the effect of bamboo species, specific pressure, and strand length on the properties of oriented strand boards (OSBs). Laboratory scale OSBs were made from two Indonesian bamboo species [tali (Gigantochloa apus) and andong (Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea)] with three different strand lengths (75, 100, and 150 mm). For each bamboo species and strand length, OSBs were fabricated by bonding bamboo strands with 7% phenol formaldehyde resin and 0.5% wax emulsion based on their oven-dry weight. The layer structure of the face, core, and back of the three-layer cross-oriented board were 25%, 50%, and 25%, respectively. A specific pressure of 25 or 30 kg/cm2 was applied for 6 min at 160 °C. The targeted OSB density was 0.75 g/cm3. The results showed that OSBs from andong bamboo had better dimensional stability and bending strength than those from tali bamboo. The bending strength of bamboo-based OSBs increased with increased bamboo strand length. A strong interaction was found between bamboo species, specific pressure, and strand length on the mechanical properties of OSBs. The properties of all bamboo-based OSBs produced in this study conform with the requirements of the Japanese Industrial Standard JIS A 5908 (2015) and British Standard BS EN 300 (2006).

Bamboo-based composite has been used widely for building components and furniture. Oriented flattened bamboo board (OFBB) is a composite board consisting of oriented structure sheets of flattening bamboo. This study aimed to analyze the physical and mechanical properties of the OFBB from ater (Gigantochloa atter) and betung (Dendrocalamus asper) bamboo. A three-layer flattened bamboo board using the isocyanate resin with a density target of 0.6 g/cm3 was applied. The characteristics of raw bamboo, the contact angle of OFBB, and board properties of density, moisture content, thickness swelling, and water absorption, as well as bending, internal bonding (IB), and compressive strength properties were determined to evaluate the quality of the OFBB. Based on the findings, the thin wall thickness of ater bamboo enhanced the physical and mechanical properties of the OFBB compared to the higher wall thickness of betung bamboo. Therefore, further development in bamboo composite products with those anatomical properties seems promising. The dimensional stability and bending properties of OFBB from ater bamboo met the quality of first grade of the Canadian Standard for OSB and waferboard, except for the IB strength. Black spruce is widely used for lumber production in Eastern Canada, and it has the potential to replace trembling aspen and paper birch for oriented strand board (OSB) manufacturing. This study evaluated the bending modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR), the internal bond (IB), and the thickness swelling (TS) of OSB panels made from black spruce and trembling aspen strands and how they were affected by strand geometry. All the panels met the CSA O437 (1993) standard for class O-2 properties except for the TS. The strand thickness had a significantly negative effect on the bending properties but a significantly positive effect on the IB and TS properties. The strand length had a significantly positive effect on the parallel bending properties but a significantly negative effect on the perpendicular bending properties and the IB, except for the TS. The OSB panels made from aspen obtained better bending properties, while the IB and TS properties were lower than those of the OSB black spruce panels. The results indicate that black spruce strands obtained from the Eastern Canadian softwood lumber industry are suitable for OSB production, but more work is required to reduce the TS.
