“…The increase was in this case probably not caused by reflux of substantial amounts of alkaline duodenal contents, since the juice from the gastric cannula in all experiments was of high acidity. It has been reported that bile salts are able to release gastrin (Bedi et al 1971). Such a mechanism could have been operating in the present experiments as some bile regurgitation into the main stomach frequently took place when cholecystokinin was infused.…”

“…This inverse relationship between gastrin release and gastric acidity has been described in atrophic gastritis (Ganguli, Cullen & Irvine, 1971;Strickland, Bhathal, Kor-man & Hansky, 197 1). However, this is a complex problem, as it has been observed that bile salts stimulate the release of gastrin from the canine antrum (Bedi, Wasunna & Gillespie, 1969), yet on the other hand the involvement of the antrum by gastritis may reduce antral gastrin secretion . In patients with both duodenal and gastric ulcers a higher gastrin secretion is associated with a higher acid secretion.…”

“…This has been demonstrated in animal experimenta-:800 t-tion (Cross and Wangensteen, 1951;Lambert, 1962;Levrat et al, 1962;Moffat and Berkas, 1965;Gillison 6oog et al, 1972;Henderson et al, 19731, postoperatively 2 in patients following gastrectomy (Helsingen, 1960; -400 3 Cox, 1961;Kleckner et al, 1972) and in patients with -;:: achlorhydria (Palmer, 1960;Orlando and Bozymski, 1973). There is other evidence to show that the effect .loo of bile on gastric and oesophageal rnucosa is deleterious (Grant et al, 1951;Davenport, 1968;Geall et al, 1970;Black et al, 1971;Bedi et al, 1971;Safaie-Shirazi and DenBesten, 1973).…”
