Effect of bulb size on selected morphological characteristics of seed stalks, seed yield and quality of onion (Allium cepa L.) seeds

Abstract: In the years 2002 − 2004 research was carried out on the effect of onion (Allium cepa L.) 'Wolska' bulb size on selected morphological characteristics of seed stalks, seed yield and quality. Commercial bulbs (vernalised, one-year-old mother bulbs) were divided into three groups: small, medium and large, with diameters of 4.2-5.3 cm, 5.4-6.3 cm and 6.4-8.5 cm, respectively. Then, the bulbs of each group were planted in the field and grown routinely with the purpose of producing seeds. The following characters w… Show more

“…Rathore et al (1980) stated that number of flowers/umbel is positively related to bulb weight, as is the case in the present study. Morozowska and Hołubowicz (2009) found that umbel diameter (6.0 cm) was higher from larger bulbs (6.4-8.5 cm diameter). Larger bulbs resulted in larger umbel diameter (Ambulker et al, 1995), which agrees with the present study.…”

“…On the contrary, the lowest bulb diameter was recorded in Ac_G_18_380 (27.5 mm). Morozowska, and Holubowicz. (2009) found that diameter of the bulb depends on ring of onion formed by the leaf.…”

“…Several workers [9] [31] [40] [85] [89] have reported a greater seed yield in large bulbs and attributed this to a larger amount of available assimilates in large bulbs. It was observed that the big bulbs gave larger number of seed stalks than medium and small ones [75] [82] [87] [90]- [93]. Moreover, the seed yield was higher for plants grown from large bulbs in comparison with the small ones [93] [94].…”
