Effect of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen on the Growth of Orange-Colored Streptococcus Bovis Isolated From Bovine Rumen

Abstract: The function of C02-related growth-promoting effect in the orangecolored Streptococcus bovis was investigated. In the defined medium, CO2 requirement was very large compared with that in natural media. Most of 14C02 incorporated was detected in the protein part. On the other hand, in the Polypepton-yeast extract medium, 14CO2 incorporation was extremely small and about 40 % of the incorporated 14C02 was found in the lipid part. Though S. bovis required only biotin as an essential factor among the vitamins, in … Show more

“…(1969). Both the availability of CO, and the presence of a complex medium favour growth of this organism (Hayashi & Kitahara 1976). Carbon dioxide stimulated the growth of the strains used in the present study and they did not grow anaerobically in the absence of CO,.…”

“…PY medium was also used for the cultures of the reference strains. The procedures for maintaining the cultures and preparing inocula were the same as those previously reported (9 Glucose assay. Glucose was determined spectrophotometrically by using hexokinase (EC 2.7.1.2) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1 .49)(JO).…”
