Effect of Ceramic Properties and Depth-of-penetration Test Parameters on the Ballistic Performance of Armour Ceramics

Abstract: Through an analysis on the relationship among ceramic properties, the depth of penetration (DOP) test parameters and the ballistic performance of armour ceramics based on literatures, the effects of ceramic type, tile thickness and projectile velocity on the ballistic performance of different kinds of ceramics were investigated systematically. The results show that the ballistic performance of different armour ceramics mainly depends on its density, and by using thin ceramic tiles or under high velocity impact… Show more

“…The ultrasonic scan was used to check whether there is temperature dependence in the ultrasonic speeds in steel 1018 [4], the measurement problem of steel constructions with the non-destructive method (the penetration of the impact cone). Also was done, among others: measuring the microstructure and the speed of eutectic penetration on irradiated metallic fuel [5], the analysis of the plastic with the penetration test, in which the metallic penetrant was used to identify the crack on the pipe's surface was made, the study of the ceramic properties and depth parameters of the penetrant on the ceramic product was made [6]. The research was carried out on the resistance to penetration of hybrid ceramic-metal structures [7].…”

“…Boron carbide (B 4 C) has many excellent physical properties, such as extremely high hardness, high wear resistance, low specific gravity, and high chemical stability. Up to now, it has been widely used in wear resistant components, lightweight armor products, and neutron radiation shields, etc . However, the intrinsic brittleness and relatively bad sinterability owing to the rigid covalent bonds and low ion diffusion mobility of B 4 C have restricted its widespread application as a structural material .…”
