Effect of Charcoal Ash Coconut Shell from Waste Material at Different Size on the Physical Properties of Bitumen

Abstract: Environmental pollution caused by abundant wastes from agricultural activities has increased in recent years because of increased productivity. Agricultural waste recycling has been employed to solve this problem. Coconut shell charcoal (CSC) ash is a by-product of coconut shell (CS) used as a bitumen modifier to enhance the properties of the binder. This study investigated the effect of fineness charcoal ash from CS on the rheological properties of bitumen. Penetration, softening point, and viscosity tests we… Show more

“…[7] In road construction coconut outer cover and coconut fibers are use in road construction, coconut fiber improves the stability and skid resistance and on the other hand coconut shell charcoal ash can improve static creep and tensile strength of the pavements. [8] Coconut shell charcoal replaced in the pavements including other fillers such as stone dust [9] Coconut shell charcoal is the byproduct of coconut shell use as a binder in asphalt mix replaced with the percentage of bitumen to improve the properties of binders. “…Charcoal coconut shells have high lignin content in carbon structure which enhanced the durability and abrasion resistance properties [8]. Meanwhile Abdullah et al [9] explained on how charcoal coconut shell ash affects the physical properties of bitumen with different size. The softening point value and penetration value indicates that the modified bitumen has better resistance and susceptible to temperature [10].…”
