Effect of Circuit Geometry on Steady Flow Performance of an Automotive Turbocharger Compressor

Abstract: Downsizing and turbocharging are today considered an effective way to reduce CO2 emissions in automotive gasoline engines.\ud To this aim, a deep knowledge of turbocharger behavior could be a key solution to improve the engine-turbocharger matching\ud calculation. The influence of the intake system geometry on the surge line position is an important aspect to guide the project of\ud the intake manifold, enlarging the compressor stable zone. This aspect has a considerable impact on engine performance,\ud especi… Show more

“…The inflow is assumed to be inhomogeneous for both configurations; however, increased map width could be detected. Similar results were investigated by Galindo et al [5][6][7], Hou et al [8], Elkamel [9], Marelli et al [10] and Serrano [11]. In contrast to Kerres' results, Bayomi [12] stated that map width enhancement is gained by assembling flow straighteners upstream of the compressor, providing a more homogeneous inflow.…”

“…Surge has been studied for last three decades [2,3] to design systems to avoid its occurrence [4,5]. Many parameters affect the surge instability and especially geometry and operating conditions of the compressor but also downstream and upstream geometry circuit [6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…Pioneering experimental studies have been carried out on the influence of pulsating backpressure on the performance of centrifugal compressor in recent decade [5][6][7]. The pulsating backpressure is produced by a pulse generator which is installed downstream the compressor to simulate the intake valves.…”
