Effect Of Crude Seed Extract Of Some Indigenous Plants For The Control Of Legume Pod Borer (<i>Maruca Vitrata</i> F.) On Country Bean

Abstract: The crude seed extract of neem, black pepper, mahogani, and garlic bulb with three doses were evaluated against legume pod borer in the country bean field in two seasons kharif 2006 and rabi 2006-2007. The neem seed extract applied @150 and 100 g/l and mahogani seed extract @ 100 g/l of water 7 days intervals on the country bean showed better performance in the reduction of flower and pod damage with significantly higher yield of bean in both the seasons. The seed extracts lost the efficacy against legume pod … Show more

“…Flower and pod-feeding Lepidopterans cause serious yield losses to edible legumes particularly in tropical and sub-tropical zones ( Rouf and Sardar, 2011 ). Maruca vitrata (= testulalis ) Geyer (Lepdoptera: Crambidae), a genetically complex species ( Margam et al, 2011 , Periasamy et al, 2015 ), is recognised as one of the most serious legume pests ( Abate and Ampofo, 1996 , Jackai, 1995 , Shanower et al, 1999 , Sharma, 1998 ) due to an extensive host range, high damage potential and cosmopolitan distribution ( Margam et al, 2011 , Sharma et al, 1999 , Taylor, 1967 ).…”

“…In contrast, there is evidence that botanical insecticides can effectively control the lepidopteron larvae (Koul et al, 2004). Various authors verified that neem extract is suitable to control different insect pests like Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, Maruca vitrata, including H. armigera in different cropping systems (Boomathi et al, 2006;Rouf and Sardar, 2011).…”
