Effect of Dentin Biomodification Using Naturally Derived Collagen Cross-Linkers: One-Year Bond Strength Study

Abstract: Purpose. This study investigated the long-term resin-dentin bond strength of dentin biomodified by proanthocyanidin-rich (PA) agents. Materials and Methods. Forty molars had their coronal dentin exposed, etched, and treated for 10 minutes with 6.5% grape seed extract (GSE), 6.5% cocoa seed extract ethanol-water (CSE-ET), 6.5% cocoa seed extract acetone-water (CSE-AC), and distilled water (CO). Samples were restored either with One-Step Plus (OS) or Adper Single-Bond Plus (SB). Bond strength test was performed … Show more

“…Proanthocyanidin from grape seed extract is a natural safe compound and works as well as glutaraldehyde (27). Proanthocyanidin extract stabilizes and increases the density of type-I collagen network (26), which improves the dentin mechanical properties and decreases the swelling ratio that may indicate a matrix resistance against enzymatic degradation (11,26). The results of the present study did not show a statistically difference between glutaraldehyde and proanthocyanidin extract at 24 h for all adhesives studied.…”

“…A previous study that evaluated the effect of cross-linking agents (glutaraldehyde and proanthocyanidin extract) on dentin bond strength showed improvement of immediate adhesion, but the stabilization of bonding after long-term storage depended on the adhesive type (11). Dentin biomodification is a biomimetic strategy therapy to enhance the collagen scaffold biomechanically and reduce biodegradability against endogenous and exogenous proteases (9).…”

“…Higher αTBS were observed for 6.5% grape seed extract (GSE) immediately (SB-62.9MPa; OS-51.9MPa) when compared to 6.5% cocoa seed extract ethanol-water(CSE-ET) (SB-56.95MPa; OS-60.28MPa), 6.5% cocoa seed extract acetone-water(CSE-AC) (SB-49.97MPa; OS-54.44MPa), and distilled water (CO) (SB-52.0MPa; OS-44.0MPa). GSE and CSE-ET agents provided enhanced immediate adhesion and stabilization to demineralized dentin after long-term storage, depending on adhesive system [24].…”
