Effect of diamagnetic dilution and non-stoichiometry on ESR spectra in manganites

Abstract: ESR spectra are studied in a series of diamagnetically diluted manganites, single crystals of LaGa 1−x Mn x O 3 , in a broad range of the Mn ion concentration, 0 < x 1. With increase in Mn concentration, a complex multi-line spectrum, typical for low Mn concentrations, evolves to an exchange-narrowed several-or single-line spectrum at x > 0.05. The temperature behaviour of the ESR linewidth in the range of 80-300 K is found to be very different in the materials with high (x 0.2) and intermediate (0.05 x 0.1) co… Show more

“…The narrow line stays at the same field, but rapidly decreases in amplitude. The spectral shape and its evolution with temperature variation are very similar to the behavior observed in γ-Fe 2 O 3 ferrofluid [5,10], as well as in some other systems (see, for example, the data on Fe precipitates in glasses [8] and Mn clusters in LaGa(Mn)O 3 [11]). 3 (which is typical for Fe 3+ ions) and it grows with cooling.…”

“…Since the energy of these states lie well above of the ground level, the intensity of the narrow feature decreases exponentially upon cooling. Note that a similar thermally activated double-pattern spectrum has been observed, as well, in very different systems of magnetically dilute LaGa 1x Mn x O 3 at intermediate Mn concentrations, and was ascribed to Mn clusters [41]. This similarity in EMR spectra and temperature behavior may have significant physical meaning, revealing continuous transfer from the exchange coupled spin clusters in diamagnetic host lattice to superparamagnetic nanoparticles.…”

“…Such a shape is typical for NPs as well as superparamagnetic and exchange-coupled clusters embedded in a non-magnetic matrix (see, for example, Refs. [8,11,[25][26][27][28][29]). In Ref.…”
