Effect of Dietary Flaxseed Intake on Circulating Sex Hormone Levels among Postmenopausal Women: A Randomized Controlled Intervention Trial

Abstract: Lignan intake, and its richest food source, flaxseed, have been associated with reduced breast cancer risk. Endogenous sex hormones, such as estrogens, play a role in breast cancer development, and lignans may alter these sex hormone levels. To assess the effect of flaxseed on circulating sex hormones, a randomized controlled trial was conducted among 99 postmenopausal women in Toronto, Canada. The intervention arm consumed 2 tablespoons (15 g) of ground flaxseed daily for 7 weeks; the control arm maintained u… Show more

“…asked women to consume 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed every day for seven weeks. Women in this intervention group saw an increase in serum 2-hydroxyestrone levels and an increase in the 2/16α-hydroxyestrone ratio ( 17 ). More information is needed to understand the mechanism(s) through which flaxseed may affect estrogen metabolites.…”

“…Oestrogens are important regulators of female reproduction (ovarian follicullogenesis, oogenesis, embryo implantation in uterus and pregnancy 54 ). Previously we mentioned the ability of flaxseed to affect oestradiol release 27 , 29 , 32 , 35 , 36 , 41 , 43 , 44 , oestradiol metabolism 27 , 43 , 48 , expression of oestrogen receptors 27 , 36 , 43 and similarity of its action to the action of oestrogen 29 . These data indicate that flaxseed molecules with phytoestrogen activity can affect oestrogen-dependent reproductive processes and ovarian carcinogenesis via oestrogen receptors.…”
