Effect of Donor Strength and Bulk on Thieno[3,4‐b]‐pyrazine‐Based Panchromatic Dyes in Dye‐Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract: Near-infrared-absorbing organic dyes are critically needed in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine (TPz) based dyes can access the NIR spectral region and show power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to 8.1 % with sunlight being converted at wavelengths up to 800 nm for 17.6 mA cm of photocurrent in a co-sensitized DSC device. Precisely controlling dye excited-state energies is critical for good performances in NIR DSCs. Strategies to control TPz dye energetics with stronger donor groups… Show more

“…[14][15][16][17] A recent trend for sensitizing Pt/TiO 2 is the use of metal-free organic dyes with strong absorptivity and panchromatic sensitization properties. [18][19][20] For example, perylene-quinoxaline, [21] porphyrin-BODIPY, [22] phenothiazine-BODIPY, [23] thienopyrazine-triarylamine, [24] or multicarbazole [25] have been developed as covalently-linked multichromophore sensitizers for Pt/TiO 2 -based catalysts to realize efficient light absorption. In this context, we recently reported a dyad sensitizer of chlorophyll derivative connected with indoline dye for panchromatic PHE.…”

“…Addition of other donor unit like dithiafulvenyl with phenothiazine unit in the D-π-A configuration was found as helpful in improving the efficiency [159,162]. Liyanage et al [157] have achieved about 8.1% of efficiency by altering the donor and acceptor group in thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine (TPz) based dyes. This variation of the substitution groups makes a drastic change in the energy level position of the dyes and hence facilitates the efficient carrier transfer.…”

“…To circumvent the lower Δ G inj of NL6, an analogous TPz‐based dye NL11 was fabricated using ethyl groups instead of phenyl groups on the TPz pyrazine ring. This was found to result in a raised excited‐state energy level of the dye, efficient electron injection without changing the TiO 2 CB energy, higher photovoltages, and only a 20 nm blue‐shift of the IPCE spectrum . Wang and co‐workers examined the effects of adding a thiophene spacer on both sides of the TPz building block to yield FNE32 .…”

[41] Wang and coworkers examined the effects of adding at hiophenes pacer on both sides of the TPz building block to yield FNE32.
