Effect of electrolyte flow on a gas evolution electrode

Abstract: In this study, the effect of flow of the electrolyte on an electrolysis cell and a zinc cell is investigated. The gain of energy brought by the flow is discussed and compared to the viscous losses in the cells. We point out that the balance between the gained electrical power and the viscous loss power is positive only if the hydrodynamic resistance of the circuit is correctly designed and further comment on the economical viability of the whole process. A model of the studied phenomena is proposed in the last… Show more

“…In the low current density situation, the distribution of bubbles is wide, centered on a well defined radius. In the high current density situation, a second peak appears in the bubble size distribution, which is much smaller in size than the previous ones [20], [9]. This peak is interpreted by considering that the action of the current on the metal surface creates modifications of the oxide layers which can allow the appearance of other types of nucleation sites.…”

“…When the radius of the bubble reaches the Fritz's radius R F ritz (i), the bubble detaches. The Fritz radius distribution follows a Gaussian distribution as described experimentally in litterature [9]. Oxygen volumes and bubble radii are reset to 0 for active sites that have validated the bubble detachment test (when R(i, t) > R F ritz (i)).…”
