Effect of electron inertia on the speed and shape of ion-acoustic solitary waves in plasma

Abstract: Conditions for the existence of ion-acoustic solitary waves are investigated in a cold collisionless plasma taking into account the electron inertia. The Sagdeev’s pseudopotential is derived in terms of u, the ion velocity. It is found that there exists a critical value of u0(≠0), the value of u at which (u′)2=0, beyond which the soliton solution ceases to exist and the electron inertia plays a non-insignificant role in determining this critical value. This result reproduces the result of Johnston and Epstein … Show more

“…They observed that a very small change in the initial conditions destroys the oscillatory behaviour of the wave. Chatterjee and Das [34] also observed the effect of electron inertia on the critical value of u, the ion speed of the waves, for which the oscillatory behaviour is destroyed. Maitra and Roychoudhury [35] studied dust acoustic solitary waves by the same technique, considering the dust dynamics in a dusty plasma consisting of warm dust particles and Boltzmann-distributed electrons and ions.…”

“…Brought to you by | MIT Libraries Authenticated Download Date | 5/10/18 12:32 AM Recently Chatterjee and Jana [36] studied the speed and shape of dust acoustic solitary waves in the presence of dust streaming by the same technique used in [32,34,35]. But in both studies in [35] and [36] dust acoustic solitary waves in the one-dimensional and unmagnetized plasma were investigated.…”

“…They observed that a very small change in the initial condition destroyed the oscillatory behavior of the solitary waves. Chatterjee and Das [22] found that the electron inertia has a significant role in determining the critical initial value of the ion speed beyond which the solitary waves cease to exist. Later Chatterjee [23] and Chatterjee et al [24,25] studied this phenomena on solitary waves for different situations.…”

“…(1)-(9), we assume that all dependent variables depend on a single independent variable = x -Vt, where V is the velocity of the solitary wave and the variable ~ is the spatial coordinate in the coordinate system moving with the solitary-wave velocity. In the pseudopotential approach several authors used it[19][20][21][22][23]. In terms of Eqs.…”
