“…We used an estimated reduction in live weight of proportionately 0·146, resulting in a cost of £64 million. This estimate is based on the average of the lowest (6·2% weight reduction, Coop et al (1985)) and highest (0·23 reduction, Mackay et al, 1998) estimates and the average is close to weight reductions estimated by Coop et al (1985) of 0·12 and 0·17 for high infestation levels, with or without anthelmintic treatments. The range in weight reductions is very wide.…”

“…This reflects the difficulty in measuring the impact of GI parasites on performance. Coop et al (1982 and1985) used lambs that were kept clean until the start of the experiment at 15 and 17 weeks of age and given exact doses of larvae. Mackay et al (1998) observed effects within a system, so that the challenge and treatments better reflect normal conditions, but they are also less well controlled.…”

“…Even in temperate sheep-producing regions, such infections can cause health and welfare problems. For example, ovine ostertagiosis (due to infection with the GI nematode Teladorsagia circumcincta ) is a major constraint upon the productivity of growing lambs in the UK, with even sub-clinical infections causing marked decreases in productivity (Coop et al ., 1982 and1985). However, effective control of GI nematode parasites is becoming more difficult.…”
