“…This finding is consistent with the differences observed in the proportions of the different fiber types. It is also in agreement with the well-documented observation that the muscles of bulls are redder than those of steers (Seideman and Crouse, 1986 Moody et al, 1980;and Solomon and Lynch, 1988, in sheep;and Seideman and Crouse, 1986, in cattle). These changes are commonly explained as a consequence of the hypothyroidism that occurs during a period of undernutrition (Beverly et al, 1991 It is known that thyroid hormones regulate the expression of type IIB myosin isoform (MHC2b) (Bacou and Vigneron, 1988).…”

“…Some studies (Ashmore et al 1972;Suzuki et al 1988) suggest that in sheep the percentage and distribution of the different types of fibres, classified by means of the m-ATPase technique, are genetically determined in the semitendinosus, triceps brachii and abdominal cutaneous muscles. However, the percentage of the m-ATPase fibre types changed after birth in the quadriceps muscle (White et al 1978) and in the longissimus muscle (Moody et al 1980). Velotto et al (2005) studied the distribution of the three fibre types in two muscles of the Gentile of Puglia (caput longum m. tricipitis brachii and m. psoas major) and confirmed the high percentage of FOG fibres in both muscles considered.…”

“…Johnston et al (1981) reported that, in general, as the energy level in the diet increased, the percentage of intermediate fibers decreased and the percentage of white fibers increased. Moody et al (1980) postulated that the available source of energy in lamb rations appeared to cause a physiological shift from intermediate fibers to white fibers. These references refer to work on castrated or female animals.…”

“…Rompala and Jones (1984) observed that the energy density of the diet and length of time fed affected the solubility of collagen in muscle. Moody et al (1980) postulated that the available source of energy in lamb diets appeared 1824 J. Anim. Sci.…”
