Effect of food intake and ambient air pollution exposure on ankylosing spondylitis disease activity

Abstract: Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by axial arthritis. The genetic-environmental factors seem to be involved in the pathogenesis of the disease and the disease debilitates patients during the most productive stages of their lives. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between two environmental factors, diet and air pollution with disease activity and functional impairment in AS. Methods: A case-control study was carried out. Thirty patients … Show more

“…Mitigating the pollutant factor could save the Spanish State 350 million (M) euros, as well as undoubtedly reducing the suffering caused by this type of disease. In Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), a >60% correlation with pollutant particles (PM 2.5 ) has been found: a prolonged exposure leads to worsening in the control of the inflammatory outbreak of this disease [ 109 ]. An average cost to address AS in Spain of 11,462 euros/patient/year has been estimated, including direct costs and productivity losses [ 110 ].…”

“…Long-term exposure to PM2.5 is closely related to the BASMI, BASFI, and BASDAI scores of patients with AS. Furthermore Long-term exposure to pollution can cause severe symptoms in patients with AS [ 79 ]. Therefore, more in-depth research is needed to explore the pathogenesis of AS in Chinese patients in the future.…”

“…Conversely, mineral absorption in nonIBD AS patients is less clear. A casecontrol study showed that AS pa tients have a higher calcium intake compared to healthy controls, measured through the semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire [24]. However, subclinical gut inflam mation, affecting half of AS patients [16], may lead to micronutrient deficiency.…”
