Effect of Friction Stir Processing Process Parameters on the Mechanical Properties of AZ31B Mg Alloy

Abstract: Friction Stir Processing AZ31B Mg Alloy Grain Refinement Taguchi In this investigation, the effect of friction stir processing (FSP) parameters such as rotational speed, traverse speed and tool tilt angle on the mechanical properties of tensile strength, hardness and impact energy of magnesium alloy AZ31B was studied. The experiments were carried out as per Taguchi parametric design concepts and an L9 orthogonal array was used to study the influence of various combinations of process parameters. Statistical op… Show more

“…The material under the shoulder also undergoes plastic deformation due to the high strain rate provided by the stirring action of the tool pin. The main applications of FSP for microstructural modification in metals include homogenization of reinforcement in MMCs [4], grain refinement through dynamic recrystallization [5][6][7], and superplasticity [8][9][10][11].…”

“…In solution 1, i.e., the shown values of design parameters, it is 89.8% likely to get the Response = 2.415 sec. "Any other combination of the design parameters will either be statistically less reliable or give poor results of at least one response" [26]. However, these solutions could be used to achieve the possible values of the response.…”

“…Three body abrasion wear behaviour of functionally graded aluminium/B4C metal matrix composite was investigated by Radhika and Raghu [11] [16] have illustrated the use of Taguchi technique to experiment and optimize friction stir process (FSP) parame-ters in order to achieve optimized mechanical properties of AZ31B Mg alloy. Raos and Stojsic [17] have used central composite design (CCD) to determine the influence of two pro-cessing parameters: injection pressure and injection speed on tensile strength of injection moulded part and ANOVA of the response indicated injection pressure to be the most influ-ential factor.…”
