Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic invades the world. Public health evaluates the incidence of infections and death, which should be reduced and need desperately quarantines for infected individuals. This article review refers to the roles of Ginkgo Biloba to reduce the risk of infection in the respiratory tract, the details on the epidemiology of corona COVID-19 and influenza, and it highlights how the Ginko Biloba could have been used as a novel treatment. Ginkgo Biloba can reduce the risk of infection by several mechanisms; these mechanisms involve Ginkgo Biloba contains quercetin and other constituents, which have anti-inflammatory and immune modulator effects by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines concentrations. Cytokines cause inflammation which have been induced the injuries in lung lining. Some observational studies confirmed that Ginkgo Biloba reduced the risk of asthma, sepsis and another respiratory disease as well as it reduced the risk of cigarette smoking on respiratory symptoms. While other evidences suggested the characters of Ginkgo Biloba as an antivirus agent through several mechanisms. Ginkgolic acid (GA) can inhibit the fusion and synthesis of viral proteins, thus, it inhibit the Herpes Simplex Virus type1 (HSV-1), genome replication in Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and the infections of the Zika Virus (ZIKV). Also, it inhibits the wide spectrum of fusion by inhibiting the three types of proteins that have been induced fusion as (Influenza A Virus [IAV], Epstein Barr Virus [EBV], HIV and Ebola Virus [EBOV]). The secondary mechanism of GA targeting inhibition of the DNA and protein synthesis in virus, greatly have been related to its strong effects, even afterward the beginning of the infection, therefore, it potentially treats the acute viral contaminations like (Measles and Coronavirus COVID-19). Additionally, it has been used topically as an effective agent on vigorous lesions including (varicella-zoster virus [VZV], HSV-1 and HSV-2). Ginkgo Biloba may be useful for treating the infected people with coronavirus COVID-19 through its beneficial effect. To assess those recommendations should be conducted with random control trials and extensive population studies.

Viral myocarditis (VMC) is an inflammatory cardiac disease caused by coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) that leads to heart failure or sudden death. However, efficient therapeutic strategies for VMC remain lacking. Ginkgo biloba extract was previously demonstrated to have anti‐inflammatory activity and had been used in prevention and therapy of some cardiovascular diseases (ie myocardial infarction), indicating Ginkgo biloba extract may be a potential drug for the treatment of VMC. This study was, for the first time, to investigate the intervention effects of Ginkgo biloba extract on VMC model mice and explore its potential mechanisms. As a result, VMC mice model was successfully established by CVB3 infection, exhibiting significantly higher viral titer, serum creatine kinase isoenzyme level, heart weight/body weight ratio, histopathologic scores, collagen volume fraction (CVF), and significantly increased expression of S100A4 and matrix metalloproteinase‐3 (MMP‐3) at protein and messenger RNA levels compared with the control group. Also, the expression of S100A4 and MMP‐3/CVF was positively correlated. Ginkgo biloba extract treatment significantly reversed the trend in all the above parameters. Thus, Ginkgo biloba extract may be a promising therapeutic approach against VMC because it improved myocardial injury and alleviated the degree of myocardial fibrosis through suppression of S100A4 and MMP‐3.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by progressive degeneration of cartilage, formation of cartilage at the cartilage edge, and remodeling of the subchondral bone. Pro-inflammatory cytokines [e.g., interleukin (IL)-1β] that induce inflammation and promote chondrocyte damage induce OA. Currently, the diagnosis of OA is commonly based on imaging examinations (e.g., X-ray) and evaluations of clinical symptoms; however, biomarkers that can effectively diagnose OA are currently not available. By studying the mechanism underlying OA cartilage injury and changes in the concentrations of the biomarkers procollagen type II carboxy-terminal propeptide (PIICP), collagen type-II C-telopeptide fragments (CTX-II), and type II collagen cleavage neoepitope (C2C) during pathogenesis, the present study established a theoretical basis for the evaluation and early diagnosis of OA. In an experiment, 10 ng/ml IL-1β was used to the treat chondrocyte-induced OA models in vitro for 0, 12, 24 and 48 h. Western blotting was used to detect the expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3, MMP-13, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) protein at each time-point. The concentrations of CTX-II, C2C, and PIICP in the cell culture supernatant were detected by ELISA kit. A biochemical kit was used to detect changes of nitric oxide (NO) in the cell culture supernatant. In addition, chondrocytes were treated with 10 ng/ml IL-1β for 0, 30, 60 and 90 min and the translocation and phosphorylation of the NF-κB pathway were investigated by western blotting. Following IL-1β stimulation, the NF-κB pathway was activated to increase the expression levels of MMPs and iNOS synthesis downstream of the pathway, resulting in an increased degradation of type II collagen (Col II). To sum up, pro-inflammatory IL-1β induced an OA chondrocyte model. During the development of OA, the expression of MMPs and NO increased and Col II was degraded.
