Effect of Hand and Foot Massage Therapy on Psychological Factors and EEG Activity in Elderly People Requiring Long-Term Care: A Randomized Cross-Over Study

Abstract: Massage therapy is widely used as a complementary therapy in the elderly. Here, we investigate the effect of hand and foot massage therapy on psychological factors and electroencephalographic (EEG) activity in elderly people requiring long-term care. We included 12 elderly people requiring long-term care, who were randomly divided into two groups (A and B). Group A received hand massage and group B received foot massage, both for 15 min each. After 1 week, group A received foot massage and group B received han… Show more

“…A sensation of psychological well-being was frequently reported ( Mancinelli et al, 2006 ; Visconti et al, 2015 ). MM is further supposed to alleviate mood and anxiety disorders ( Leivadi et al, 1999 ; Sharpe et al, 2007 ; Nakano et al, 2019 ), improve the feeling of recovery, reduce physical fatigue ( Hemmings et al, 2000 ; Mori et al, 2004 ; Robertson et al, 2004 ; Ogai et al, 2008 ; Carcano et al, 2010 ; Pinar et al, 2012 ; Delextrat et al, 2013 ; Jourdain, 2015 ).…”

“…This does not mean that we deny the fact that individual differences in the method and skill of application exist when applying these techniques, but that ignoring the basics of the differences multiplies the confounding factors. This seems to have been realised as such by other researchers who have started giving more details of the interventions used in their studies [13].…”

“…Unlike other programs, the initial location value or number of dipoles is not set in advance. The operation is relatively simple, and while the resolution is low, the result is not a primitive spherical model, but instead a tomographic image superimposed onto Talairach atlas, which can be shown in color and three dimensions (Figure 1) [48][49][50]. LORETA is being improved, and it has recently become possible to evaluate functional lagged connectivity and the directionality of that connectivity (isolated effective coherence; iCoh) between different areas of the brain.…”
