Effect of Hygrothermal Aging and Surface Treatment on the Dynamic Mechanical Behavior of Flax Fiber Reinforced Composites

Abstract: The recent developments of FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) are towards the growth and usage of natural FRP in the field of engineering due to both environmental and economic benefits. Flax fiber is one of the most commonly used natural fibers. One of the critical factors affecting the mechanical behavior of FFRP (flax fiber reinforced polymer) is hygrothermal aging. Some experimental works have been conducted to investigate the effect of hydrothermal aging on static behavior of FFRP. However, fewer efforts have… Show more

“…As is widely known [40,50], the storage modulus is typically associated with the material stiffness: it measures the material's capability to store the energy applied. Two different regions of the storage modulus curve of fiber-reinforced polymers by varying temperature were evidenced, i.e., the first one below glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymeric matrix and the second one above Tg, named glassy region and rubbery region, respectively.…”

“…In the glassy region, the storage modulus of fiber-reinforced composite materials was high because the components (i.e., matrix and reinforcement) were extremely immobilized, allowing a stiff behavior. Vice versa, FRP components acquired mobility, losing their close packing arrangement in the rubbery region, thus leading to decrease of the storage modulus with temperature [40].…”
