Effect of Intra-Ply Hybrid Patches and Hydrothermal Aging on Local Bending Response of Repaired GFRP Composite Laminates

Abstract: This study investigates the influence of intra-ply hybrid patches and hydrothermal aging on the indentation properties of patch repaired GFRP composites. Fabrics with various proportions of glass and Kevlar fibers were employed as the patches to achieve enhanced mechanical properties by hybridizing Kevlar and glass fibers together. Hydrothermal aging behavior of repaired composite laminates modified with water-resistant glass fibers in the outer layers was further investigated. Specimens were immersed in an en… Show more

“…Gas-gun impact tests were performed to calculate the energy absorbed by the GFRP and SMA/GFRP specimens via different failure modes. From Figure 6 , for GFRP specimens, three major failure modes have been observed, which are primary fiber failure, matrix cracking, and delamination [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ]. In contrast, energy absorbed by SMA/GFRP impact specimens has two more extra modes, namely, the SMA pull-out and the SMA deformation modes ( Figure 7 ).…”

“…21,22 The QSI test was used to investigate the out-of-plane mechanical properties of intra 23,24 and inter-ply [25][26][27] hybrid composites and their repairing applications. [28][29][30] However, the effects of hybridization types have not yet been clearly identified. In addition, although the effect of the high temperature was examined at higher degrees for hybrid composites 31,32 in the QSI test, the effects of lower temperatures need to be elucidated.…”

“…5 Temperature interactions with LVI loads induces complex manifestations of damage mechanisms within the composite materials. 13,14 The mechanical strength of CFRP laminates are weaken at elevated temperature. 15 In Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) laminate the matrix is reliant on the operating temperature and on the fabrication cycle, that influences the Glass Transition Temperature (Tg).…”
