“…In general, glutamate concentrations tended to be higher once seizure activity initiated, but it was at the initiation of hippocampal status epilepticus, and at the termination of the experiments with euthanasia that the clearest evidence of glutamate release occurred. Sierra-Paredes et al (2000, 2001 have reported an extracellular glutamate decrease during seizures in a model of epilepsy induced by administration of picrotoxin into the hippocampus through a microdialysis probe. These findings contrast with the results obtained in the present study due to the different technique used to measure glutamate concentrations, that is, sampling intervals of long duration reduce temporal resolution, and can mask acute changes in synaptic or extracellular glutamate concentration measured with microdialysis methods.…”
