Effect of Lactobacillus sporogenes (probiotic) on certain parasitological and molecular aspects in Schistosoma mansoni infected mice

Abstract: The prospective effects of Lactobacillus sporogenes (probiotics) and/or praziquantel (PZQ) treatment on some parasitological, histological and molecular aspects in Schistosoma mansoni infected mice were studied. The present data recorded that combination between PZQ (300 mg/Kg one dose 7 weeks post infection) and L. sporogenes (12.5 million spore/mice/week for 8 weeks from the first day of infection) reduced worm and ova count. Also, oogram patterns in liver and intestine recorded that treatment with L. sporog… Show more

“…Moreover, bacterial output holds anthelmintic influence that might decrease maliciousness of numerous protozoa and helminthic illness (28). These results are similar to the study of Mohamed et al (29) and Zowail et al (30) who proved the protective and curative effects of useful bacteria in mice models against infection of Schistosoma mansoni (29)(30)(31). Many strains of probiotics, like Zymomonas mobilis 1*10 9 CFU/ml, when administrated by mouth provoked minor defense reaction, in mice against S. mansoni by providing prevention in treated animals (31,32).…”

When Lactobacillus sporogenes used orally at a certain dose, for a long time, since the beginning of the infestation with S. mansoni, minimized impairment of DNA, improves liver and gut deterioration, therefore weakened adult together with ova numbers (29).…”

“…To date, various attempts have been made to investigate the protective and curative effects of beneficial bacteria in mice models for use in the control of S. mansoni [ 17 – 21 ]. Several probiotic strains, like Zymomonas mobilis , probiotic labneh containing Streptococcus salivarius subsp .…”

“…Their anthelmintic and immunomodulatory effects on S. mansoni are summarized in Table 1 . For instance, Lactobacillus sporogenes is among the most commonly studied [ 20 , 21 ] probiotic strains that showed a significant antischistosome effect in egg and larval stages of the parasite. It has remarkably reduced the worm burden as well as egg count.…”
