Effect of Low Temperature on Electric Vehicle Range

Abstract: A significant disadvantage of battery electric vehicles compared to vehicles with internal combustion engines is their sharply decreased driving range at low temperatures. Two factors are primarily responsible for this decreased range. On the one hand, the energy demand of cabin heating needs to be supplied by the vehicle’s battery since less waste heat is available from the powertrain, which could be used to cover heating demands. On the other hand, a limited capability to recuperate at low temperatures serve… Show more

“…In the future work, it is planned to include the effects of the ambient temperature on EVs range [27] and their electricity consumption. It is also planned to take into consideration the costs of green-house gasses emissions (CO 2 , NO x , SO 2 , and other) as well as operation and maintenance costs of different types of dispatchable generators (diesel generators, microturbines, fuel cells) in a microgrid.…”

“…Similar to payload, temperature is another factor which impacts the fuel/energy consumption of vehicles. Cold weather has been proven to significantly reduce the efficiency of BEVs, increasing their energy consumption by as much as 50% due to the increased demand for cabin heating and the prevention of powertrain freezing [ 52 ]. Although the impacts of this on ICEVs and FCEVs are much lower, for BEVs this factor should be acknowledged as it can have non-financial knock-on effects.…”

“…On the other hand, lower temperatures reduce the performance of lithium-ion batteries, with higher internal resistance. In addition, the ability of EVs to recoup energy during braking can be limited at lower temperatures (Steinstraeter, Heinrich, and Lienkamp 2021).…”
