Effect of material thickness and reduction ratio on roughness transfer in skin-pass rolling to DC04 grade sheet materials

Abstract: Purpose The last stage of the cold rolling process is skin-pass rolling and one of its most significant goals is to obtain appropriate topography on the surface of the sheet steel used extensively such as in automotive industry. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of thickness change and various reduction ratios on roughness transfer of DC04 grade sheet material. Design/methodology/approach DC04 grade sheet materials with different reduction ratios and several thicknesses were subjected to… Show more

“…Fig. 2 Schematic picture of roughness measurements [14] The amount of deformation (r) occurring in the sheet material was calculated by measuring the thicknesses of the material before and after pressing using a precision micrometer, with the help of Equation 1 [15]. In Equation 1, r0 represents the initial thickness of the sheet material, and r1 represents the final thickness of the sheet material after pressing.…”

“…All samples were then subjected to a single pass cold rolling process. The experimental rolling mill has a single-stand two-roll arrangement and the roll diameters are 75 mm [21]. After this process, the test specimens were annealed for 5 min to 10 min at a temperature range of 700 °C to 800 °C in order to reduce the strain hardening.…”

“…One of the main parameters of skin-pass rolling is the reduction ratio. Due to the change in the reduction ratio, surfaces with different roughness profiles can be obtained [12]. As the reduction ratio increases, the roughness value of the surface always increases [13].…”
