“…The third year was the most favourable at both locations, since all ecotypes had protein contents higher than 270 g kg −1 . Overall, these values were comparable to those reported in the literature for accessions from different geographic origins 16, 22, 23, 28, 29. The main antinutritional and toxic compounds present in grass pea seeds, such as TIs and ODAP, were investigated (Table 4).…”

“…In addition to crossing and selection of plants, several processing methods have been proposed for the reduction of ODAP toxicity, but none of them is able to completely prevent the neurotoxic effects of grass pea 3, 4, 11, 15. Recently, methionine supplementation of the diet has been proposed to counteract ODAP toxicity 16…”

“…For millions of subsistence farmers in sub Saharan Africa grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) is a cheap source of protein for livestock, but like all legumes it is deficient in the sulfur containing amino acids cysteine and methionine. [29] Fig. 7.…”

“…Methionine supplementation prevented broiler chicks from developing neurological symptoms when raw grass pea seeds were used as protein and energy sources in the diet. [29] In addition, methionine in diets enhanced the oxidative stability, increased color stability, and decreased drip loss in chicken meat. [30] In addition, sufficient methionine levels in the diet have been demonstrated to be necessary for sustaining normal immunocompetence and achieving maximum egg production in laying hens in subtropical conditions.…”

“…How much the environmental conditions can affect grass pea seed quality traits has been reported in recent studies dealing with morphological and compositional seed traits [26,31]. As a consequence of the increasing interest towards Lathyrus species as alternative pulses, it has been agreed that grass pea breeding should be focused, besides to the ODAP reduction and the plant architectural ideotype, also towards the increase in seeds of the level of Har and methionine in consideration of potential beneficial effects of on human health of these amino acids [16,17,35]. The results presented in this paper give preliminary in-formation not only on the variation of Har amount within grass pea but also on some features affecting its storage.…”
