Effect of Minimal Enteral Feeding on Splanchnic Uptake of Leucine in the Postabsorptive State in Preterm Infants

Abstract: We conducted a controlled, randomized trial to study the effect of minimal enteral feeding on leucine uptake by splanchnic tissues, as an indicator of maturation of these tissues, in preterm infants in the first week of life. Within a few hours after birth, while receiving only glucose, a primed constant infusion of [1-13 C]-leucine was started and continued for 5 h via the nasogastric tube, whereas 5,5,5 D3-leucine was infused intravenously (for both tracers, priming dose 2 mg/kg, continuous infusion 2 mg/kg/… Show more

“…A total of 2,199 title and abstracts were screened after removing the duplicates, and 102 full texts were retrieved for assessing their eligibility for inclusion. Thirty-nine studies enrolling 6,982 neonates were included in the final synthesis [8, 19‒56] (Table 2). The PRISMA flow is given in online suppl.…”

“…While nineteen studies were classified as having a low risk of bias [8, 19‒25, 27, 28, 31, 33, 36, 37, 40, 41, 45, 47, 48], 19 studies were categorized as having a variable risk of bias for random sequence generation and allocation concealment [26, 29, 30, 32, 34, 35, 38, 39, 42‒44, 46, 49‒55]. None of the RCTs had blinded the intervention to the care providers due to the nature of the intervention.…”
