Effect of Molybdenum on Wear Resistance of Cr-Nb Hard-Faced S355JR Steel

Abstract: The effect of Mo on the abrasive wear resistance of (20–23)Cr-(7–8)Nb hard-faced S355JR steel by shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) was studied. Four types of flux, consisting of fixed Cr and Nb but varying Mo contents, coated on hard-facing electrode were used. Microstructure, micro hardness, and abrasive wear resistance of the hard-faced surface were investigated by ASTM G65 D procedure. The original microstructures consist of the primary coarse and eutectic carbides. Mo affects morphology of carbides by decr… Show more

“…Adding boron in FeCrC alloy improved the hard phase distribution in the matrix which increased the hardness and improved wear properties [104][105][106]. Likewise, the addition of Mo up to a certain wt.% to form complex Mo carbides enhanced the hardness and wear and thermal shock resistance [20,23,40,95]. Altering the chromium and carbon content in the high chromium FeCrC alloys forms different hard structures, namely, hypoeutectic, eutectic, and hypereutectic [107].…”

“…Samples were chosen to be geometrically similar to hard faced part and they were made either of well weldable steel S355J0 (according to DIN: St St52-3U). Large number of parts in construction machinery is made of S355J0 steel, this is way this steel was used as base metal, but due to its poor wear resistance there is need for alloying or hard facing [8].…”
