“…The fruit and leaf of bitter melon have demonstrated an in vivo antifertility effect in female animals. Our earlier studies have reported the estrogenic and antiovulatory activities in female rats (Sharanabasappa & Saraswati, 2001;Sharanabasappa et al, 2002). The M. charantia is known for a variety of biological actions no systematic investigation for its male reproductive activities and toxicological studies has been done.…”

“…Bitter gourd has been used in traditional medicine to treat malaria, diabetes and other ailments, such as fevers, burns, skin problems and for birth control . Seed extracts of M. charantia reduce the number of ovarian follicles, alter normal oestrous cycles and inhibit pregnancy in female rats and mice . In rats, oral doses of petroleum ether, benzene, chloroform and ethanol extracts of seeds of M. charantia (250 mg kg −1 body weight) for 30 days induced irregular oestrous cycles, resulted in significant reductions in ovarian weight and numbers of developing follicles, Graafian follicles and corpora lutea and increased the number of atretic follicles .…”

Two basic glycoproteins, alpha‐ and beta‐momorcharins isolated from M. charantia seeds, when given intraperitoneally to female mice, reduced the number of oocytes ovulated.…”
