Effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on the concentration of volatile sulfur compound in mouth air of a group of Nigerian young adults

Abstract: Background:The major goal of non-surgical periodontal therapy is to reduce or eliminate the subgingival pathogenic microbial flora that is known to be associated with volatile sulfur compounds (VSC).Aim:The aim of this study was, therefore, to determine the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on the concentration of VSC in mouth air of young adults.Subjects and Methods:Four hundred subjects, grouped into two based on the absence or presence of periodontal diseases, were involved in this study. Basic per… Show more

“…Majority of the case participants (52.9%) had fair oral hygiene (OH), 27.5% had good OH and 19.6% poor OH. However, the result was in slight contrast with the study by Ehizele and Akhionbare 40 where majority of case participants had good OH. This may be because their study involved young adults (age 20-40years).…”

“…This was similar to 82.4% recorded for cases of '4 to 5mm' in another Nigerian study. 40 The average salivary LF concentration of 5.72mg/l for the control participants in this study was within the normal range for stimulated saliva which is 4.7mg/l to 8mg/l. 10,11 The average concentration for the case participants, was significantly higher than that of the control participants.…”

“…NS-PT is performed to eliminate the presence of periodontal bacteria and other local factors such as calculus, which trigger an inflammatory reaction. This procedure involves the control of dental plaque, oral hygiene instructions, and SRP [10].…”

“…The first step in the chronological sequence of periodontal procedures is termed non-surgical periodontal treatment (NS-PT), the cornerstone of periodontal therapy. It includes plaque removal and control, scaling and root planing, and occasionally, the use of chemical agents [9,10]. The goal of NS-PT is to control periodontal infection by removing bacteria and calculus from periodontally involved root surfaces.…”

“…Periodontitis is a multi-factorial disturbance in the homeostasis between dental bacterial biofilm and susceptible host (27,28). The established treatment strategy of scaling and root planning is considered to be the "gold standard" for non-surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis (29).Various studies have evaluated the efficacy of some of chemical and nonchemical agents like antibiotics and herbals as an adjunctive treatment in periodontitis management. (30,31) The pharmacological action of AV and its usage in periodontal diseases have been well documented in literature.…”
