“…With regard to the effect of tetracycline on yeasts, the results of the present study confirm the view held by many that broad‐spectrum antibiotics suppress the normal intestinal flora, thus encouraging an overgrowth of fungus, the most common of these being Candida albicans (Childs 1956; Dunlop et al 1950; Cormane & Gosling 1963; Liebeskind 1962). Such an overgrowth may or may not give rise to symptoms at this stage.…”

“…Tetracycline is the most widely used drug for the acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and also for a number of other acute pulmonary infections which require a broad‐spectrum antibiotic. Side‐effects have been noted by many and may be mild or severe as, for example, in cases of fulminating staphylococcal enteritis (Childs 1956; Today's Drugs 1963; Millard & Batten 1963; Dunlop, Davidsen & Alstead 1950).…”

“…The discovery of an effective antifungal antibiotic, nystatin, has been followed by reports of its use in the treatment of various clinical conditions (Drouhet, 1955;Robinson, 1955;Sarewitz, 1955;Sloane, 1955;Stewart, 1956) and also prophylactically to prevent Candida infections in patients on long-term treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics and cortisone (Childs, 1956;Stewart, 1956). So far, there have been no reports of strains of Candida which were resistant to nystatin, but it seems to be advisable to look out for the appearance of such strains, especially if the antibiotic is to be used prophylactically on a large scale.…”

“…Such occurrences are particularly frequent in the course of antibiotic therapy, the fungus often replacing the bacterial agent initially respon sible for the morbid affection in the lung. In these forms, Candida infections manifest themselves acutely as complicadons of a pre existing malady (20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27).…”
