Effect of obesity on pulmonary function in children

Abstract: The effect of obesity on pulmonary function was studied in 13 children, aged 8-15 years, with 147-300% ideal body weight (IBW). Measurements included lung volumes, airflow rates pre- and post-bronchodilator nebulization, diffusing capacity (DLCO), maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV), minute ventilation VE), and resting energy expenditure (REE). When compared with predicted normal values for sex, height, and body surface area (BSA), decreases (mean % predicted, +/- SE) were observed in expiratory reserve volume… Show more

“…We confirmed the association between being overweight and modifications of lung volumes (RV/total lung capacity (TLC) and FRC/TLC) using two approaches: namely the BMI z-scores and IOTF grades. We did not observe a reduction in TLC (restrictive defect), which is a rare pattern, even in adults [43,44]. This could have been related to the low prevalence of severe obesity in our series.…”

“…31,32 Obesity is associated with lung changes (e.g., decreased lung volumes, decreased CO diffusion, and bronchodilation after Ventolin challenge 33 ). These lung changes, which may manifest as the symptoms diagnosed as asthma, probably are the result of mechanical changes from obesity.…”

“…Os problemas com crianças obesas incluem distúrbios metabólicos e físicos, além de estresse psicossocial. Alterações da função respiratória foram relatadas em muitos estudos [2][3][4] .…”
