The present review aims to map the current literature on educational interventions to promote food literacy in type 2 diabetes, with a particular focus on the concept of patient engagement. The systematic review was implemented on five databases with no restrictions on the publication year. The studies selected for the review were focused on patients with type 2 diabetes, ranging from 2003 to 2021 and published in 13 countries (44% USA). Thirty-three articles were analyzed. Twenty-seven articles targeted singular patients; fifteen articles conceptualized patient engagement as self-management. In seven articles, the provider is a multidisciplinary team. Twenty articles did not report a theoretical framework in the intervention development, and eleven did not use an intervention material. Twenty-six articles did not use a technology proxy. Outcome categories were narratively mapped into four areas: clinical, psychological, behavioral, and literacy. To date, most of the interventions are heterogeneous in the adopted methodology, measures, and outcomes considered. More attention should be given to the psychosocial characterization of patient engagement as well as the technological support. High-quality, randomized controlled trials and longitudinal studies are lacking and need to be conducted to verify the efficacy of these insights.

Additional fees for ward pharmacists' services have been valued for hospitals in Japan. However, the calculation period for services provided to inpatients in the psychiatric ward is limited to 8 weeks. This study aimed to reveal the need for the services of pharmacists in the hospital ward for inpatients hospitalized for ＞ 8 weeks in the psychiatric ward. Patients who were hospitalized in the psychiatric ward from September 2016 to February 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. The pharmacists suggested prescriptions for inpatients admitted for ＞ 8 weeks, similar to those admitted for ＜ 9 weeks, and this supported pharmacotherapy without exacerbating patient outcomes. Moreover, signiˆcant decreases in benzodiazepine doses were found between the prior and post prescription suggestions of the pharmacist for inpatients ＞ 8 weeks of admission. Healthcare expenditures were also reduced. These results suggest that the prescriptions suggested by pharmacists for inpatients admitted for ＞ 8 weeks in the psychiatric ward were useful. In conclusion, ourˆndings show that ward pharmacists' services were necessary not only for the inpatients hospitalized for ＜ 9 weeks, but also for those hospitalized for ＞ 8 weeks.

Rationale, Aims, and Objectives This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of Vietnamese diabetics in an outpatient setting regarding hypoglycaemia, insulin use, and insulin pen and to evaluate the factors related to the KAP, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and glycaemic control status. Methods We interviewed patients by 16‐item questions on knowledge and eight questions on attitude, and requested the patient to demonstrate the injection technique with a sampled insulin pen. Results The response rate was 74% (148 patients included). The proportions of patient having a good knowledge, positive attitude, and good practice were 45.9%, 78.4%, and 44.6%, respectively. The two most common incorrect steps in using insulin pen were skipping to prime pen needle (90.9%) and not removing the used needle from the pen after using (87.8%). Patients using insulin at least 1 year had better knowledge (P = .025), more positive attitude (P = .017), and better practice of using insulin pen (P = .042). Patients had more positive attitude of insulin's role (P = .038) if they either used insulin in combination with oral diabetic medications or had history of using insulin vials. The number of patients having good knowledge was statistically significant higher in participants who previously received counselling from health professionals (P = .001). We also found a positive correlation between good knowledge of patients and good practice skills (P < .001). Patients with poor practice of insulin were more likely to have ADRs at the injection sites (P = .013). The patients with poorer level of knowledge had significant higher risk of hypoglycaemia (P = .001). KAP levels did not correlate with glycaemic control status. Conclusions The majority of outpatients had positive attitude towards insulin's role; however, their knowledge and practice of hypoglycaemia and using insulin pen needs improvement. This study will be helpful in the planning of patient education strategies.
