Bi 2.1x Pb x Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + d samples containing Y, Nd, or La on the Sr or Ca site were synthesized at 760-790 ° C in flowing N 2 and were oxidized in air at different temperatures. The samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, chemical analysis, inelastic neutron scattering, and EXAFS spectroscopy. The oxidation kinetics of the solid solutions and the microstructure of the oxidation products were shown to correlate with the rare-earth content.
