This paper reviews the state of the art on autonomous vehicles as of 2017, including their impact at socio-economic, energy, safety, congestion and land-use levels. This impact study focuses on the issues that are common denominators and are bound to arise independently of regional factors, such as (but not restricted to) change to vehicle ownership patterns and driver behaviour, opportunities for energy and emissions savings, potential for accident reduction and lower insurance costs, and requalification of urban areas previously assigned to parking. The challenges that lie ahead for carmakers, law and policy makers are also explored, with an emphasis on how these challenges affect the urban infrastructure and issues they create for municipal planners and decision makers. The paper concludes with strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis that integrates and relates all these aspects.

Fuel consumption of fossil-based road vehicles is significantly affected by the way vehicles are driven by drivers. The same is true for automated vehicles with longitudinal control. This paper presents a periodic servo-loop longitudinal control algorithm for adaptive cruise control (ACC) system to minimize the fuel consumption in car-following scenarios. The fuel-saving mechanism of pulse-and-glide (PnG) operation is first discussed for the powertrain with internal combustion engine and step-gear transmission. The servo-loop controller is then designed based on a periodic switching map for the real-time implementation, and adjusted with a range-bounded feedback regulator to enhance the robustness to model mismatch. Simulations in both uniform and natural traffic flows demonstrate that this algorithm achieves significant fuel saving benefit in automated car-following scenarios up to 8.9% in naturalistic traffic flow (when coasting at neutral gear) compared to a linear quadratic (LQ) controller. Meanwhile, its inter-vehicle range is preferably bounded so that the negative impact on safety and traffic smoothness is contained.

The platooning of connected and automated vehicles has the potential to significantly benefit the road traffic, including enhancing highway safety, improving traffic capacity, and reducing fuel consumption. This paper presents a four-component analysis framework for platoon systems from a networked control perspective, including a literature review by network awareness, unified models of key components, and two application cases for controller synthesis. The networked control perspective naturally decomposes a platoon into four interrelated components, namely, 1) node dynamics (ND), 2) information flow topology (IFT), 3) formation geometry (FG), and 4) distributed controller (DC). The existing literature is categorized under this framework and analyzed according to the component features. The unified mathematical models are derived for platoons with linear dynamics and distributed controllers. As a case study, a distributed controller synthesis method is introduced for homogeneous platoons, which guarantees the internal stability in the presence of a broad class of topologies with/without uniform time-delays. The effectiveness is demonstrated by numerical simulations.
