“…This is in agreement with previous studies, which were within the range 4.0 to 5.7% for HCW and 1.8 to 2.6% for carcass dressing (Lawrence et al 2011;Parr et al 2011;McEvers et al 2014). Several studies have reported increases in hot carcass dressing in steers fed b-adrenergic agonists (Schroeder et al 2003;Avendan˜o-Reyes et al 2006;Boler et al 2012;Bohrer et al 2014). Although some studies have reported no effect of b-adrenergic agonist on carcass dressing (Winterholler et al 2007;Scramlin et al 2010), increments for at least 1.5% in carcass dressing are commonly expected when zilpaterol hydrochloride is fed to beef cattle (Schroeder et al 2003;Avendan˜o-Reyes et al 2006).…”

“…The effects of GP on tenderness are more prominent prior to postmortem aging. This was observed by Boler et al (2012) when steaks from cattle fed RH and aged 4 d had 13% greater WBSF compared to controls; however, after 7, 14, and 21 DOA, WBSF values did not differ. Other literature indicate IMP steaks required approximately 7 DOA to be similar to CON steaks, while COMBO steaks required 21 DOA to be similar to CON steaks (Quinn et al, 2008;Schneider et al, 2007).…”

“…In addition, special interest groups are raising issues about the image of U.S. beef (Consumers Union, 2013). It has been documented for both ractopamine (Boler et al, 2012;Scramlin et al, 2010;Woerner et al, 2011) and zilpaterol (Avendaño-Reyes et al, 2006;Garmyn et al, 2010;Scramlin et al, 2010) that beef from cattle fed β agonists is less tender (Consumers Union, 2013). However, Scramlin et al (2010) and Boler et al (2012) both reported that the decreased tenderness associated with ractopamine could be overcome with postmortem aging for 14 and 28 d, respectively.…”

“…For cattle and swine, 3 main feed additive products exist. The first is Optaflexx, which contains the active ingredient ractopamine hyperchloride and is used for cattle (Boler et al, 2012). The second is Paylean, which contains the active ingredient ractopamine hydrochloride and is used for swine (Apple et al, 2007;Patience et al, 2007).…”
