This study was designed to examine the influence of ractopamine (RAC) on whole-body and splanchnic energy balance. Six growing Holstein steers [body weight (BW) 0402939.5 kg] surgically fitted with an arterial and portal, hepatic, and mesenteric venous indwelling catheters were used in a repeated measures study. Treatments were a basal diet of alfalfa cubes fed at approximately1.5 ) maintenance energy requirements (days 1Á21) and basal plus RAC (430 mg head d(1 ; days 22Á42). On day 14 of each period, splanchnic and portal-drained viscera (PDV) energy balances were determined as the product of arterio-venous O 2 difference and blood flow. Blood flow was determined using down-stream dilution of p-aminohippuric acid. Whole-body energy balance was determined on days 15Á21 of each period, which included 7 d total excreta collection and 3 d of respiratory gas exchange measurements. Body weight and DM intake were greater (PB0.05) for steers receiving RAC compared with those receiving the control diet; however, no difference was observed in either BW or DMI when expressed on a BW ). These data indicate that although whole-body energy use is not affected by RAC, energy use by splanchnic tissues is decreased, thereby increasing energy use by peripheral tissues.Key words: Bovine, ractopamine, beta-agonist, energy balance, metabolism Koontz, A. À cette fin, les auteurs ont utilise´six bouvillons Holstein en croissance (poids corporel 0 402 kg 9 39,5 kg) pourvus chirurgicalement de cathe´ters a`demeure aux arte`res et aux veines porte, he´patique et me´sente´rique dans le cadre d'une expe´rience de dosage re´pe´te´. Les traitements consistaient en une ration de base compose´e de cubes de luzerne procurant environ 1,5 fois les besoins e´nerge´tiques d'entretien (du 1 er au 21 e jour) et en la ration de base plus de la RAC (430 mg par animal et par jour du 22 e au 42 e jour). Le 14 e jour de chaque pe´riode, les auteurs ont calcule´le bilan e´nerge´tique du syste`me splanchnique et des visce`res draine´s par la veine porte (VDVP) en multipliant l'e´cart entre la concentration arte´rielle et veineuse d'oxyge`ne par la circulation sanguine. La circulation sanguine a e´te´mesure´e par dilution en aval de l'acide p-aminohippurique. Le bilan e´nerge´tique de l'organisme a e´te´de´termine´du 15 e au 21 e jour de chaque pe´riode par la collecte des excre´ments totaux durant sept jours et quantification des e´changes gazeux du syste`me respiratoire.
