Effect of saccharides on secondary compounds production from stem derived callus of Datura inoxia

Abstract: Highlights Naturally, secondary metabolites scopolamine and hyoscyamine exhibited a lesser yield from leaf extract or callus induced from stems. Supplementation of saccharides (sorbitol and mannitol) callus induct media increase significant amount secondary metabolites in stem derived calli of Datura inoxia. The secondary metabolite hyoscyamine from Datura inoxia exhibited potent antimicrobial properties.

“…Saccharides are the major bioactive nutrients in food materials or products, including monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. They are the most important elicitors to alter physiological and biochemical response in plants, and influence secondary compound productions [ 29 ]. Recently, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides obtained from A. lappa have received extensive attention, and inulin-type fructan is the major component.…”

“…Different compounds present in these elicitors have been implicated in plant defense responses, including the activation of signaling pathways, ethylene production, and inhibition of auxin-induced responses [ 15 , 16 ]. It has been used successfully in both organized and unorganized cultures of plants to increase the production of miscellaneous bioactive molecules [ 17 , 18 ].…”

“…It has been well-documented that plant species belonging to the Datura genus possess a variety of secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, terpenoids, and avonoids, which have valuable medicinal and therapeutic applications [9,10]. For this reason, various strategies, such as applications of chemical [11], physical [10], and biotic elicitors [12] have been employed to stimulate the production of secondary metabolites of this plant under laboratory cultivation conditions.…”
