Effect of Salt on Growth of Rice Landraces in Vietnam

Abstract: Abstract. In this study, total 41 Vietnamese rice landraces were evaluated for their salt tolerance in the laboratory and field conditions. Amongst them, 15 landraces have shown moderate to high salinity tolerance in both screening conditions. The three landraces Chanh trui, Cuom dang 2 and Nep cuc have revealed the highest salt tolerance which were similar to the Pokkali. However, with time and levels of salt treatments, salt injury symptoms were clearly observed in all landraces with different symptoms. All … Show more

“…Since 2015, rice production in the Mekong Delta has been confronted with climate change, which poses a serious environmental threat, as sea-level rise directly affects coastal areas. In 2016, about 600,000 hectares affected by drought and saline intrusions caused economic losses of up to VND 15 trillion (≈ 670 million USD) (Anh et al 2016). In the Mekong Delta, the government has invested in structures such as dikes and dams to minimize salt intrusion from the rivers and canals.…”

“…These varieties showed high salt tolerance at level 5 with 10% to 12.5% salinity, respectively [76]. Similarly, three other native rice varieties, Chanh trui, Cuom dang 2, and Nep cuc, disclosed a strong salinity tolerance (level 3) in both bioassays and field screening [77]. Rice variety BT7 was introduced with Saltol QTL to improve salt tolerance by crossing it with FL478-Saltol, a salt tolerance donor variety.…”

“…Vietnam is known to be the center of rice diversity germplasm. Rice landraces are much diversified and played a key role in rice breeding for rice quality improvement in this country [4]. Among rice germplasm, local-colored rice landraces are abundant in this country, therefore, it should be exploited to develop commercial rice of high quality and rich medicinal value via rice breeding program.…”
