Effect of Salt Stress on the Performance of Six Soybean Genotypes

Abstract: Abstract:The effect of salinity on growth and chlorophyll content of six soybean genotypes was investigated. Plants were grown in nutrient solution in a greenhouse experiment to determine the effect of salinity on growth and Chl. a and b content of soybean leaves. Salinity was induced by natural drainage water of salted field to the nutrient solution. Electrical conductivities of the nutrient solution were 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 ds/m. Salinity induced marked decrease in plant growth and chlorophyll content of soybe… Show more

“…Soybean (Glycine max L.) is a legume grown for its seeds, which is considered valuable source of protein and oil for animal and human nutrition. Between 17% and 24% of the seed is composed of a highly palatable oil containing 29% sugars, 6% ash and zero cholesterol [1][2][3]. In addition, the seeds are rich in polyunsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, energy and mineral nutrients [4].…”

“…These lands suffer from poor growth and low plant productivity owing to the existence of soluble salts [7,8]. Salinity stress has many complicated influences and can induce changes in morpho-physiological, molecular, biochemical and ecological attributes [1,7,9,10]. It can passively influence growth, quantity and quality of crop yields [7].…”

“…Under 10 dS m -1 salinity, the maximum TDM was found in V 1 which was identical with V 2 , V 3 and V 5 but lowest in V 4 . Dry matter production which is considered as an index of photosynthetic activity (Essa and Al-Ani, 2001) was reduced under saline conditions. Reduction in total dry matter accumulation under saline conditions was also reported by Shamsul et al (2011) in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea).…”
