Salinity is one of the major issues that limits field crop productivity in an arid and semiarid environment. Therefore, two field trials were carried out over two seasons of 2018 and 2019 to investigate the enhancement of different methods of potassium application (i.e., recommended soil amendment (control; K2O), seed soaking (SS) and foliar spray (FS) in the form of potassium sulfate (K2SO4, 6 mM)) on antioxidant protection, physio-biochemical, yield and quality traits of soybean (cv. Giza 22) grown in normal (electrical conductivity; EC = 2.68 dS m−1) and saline soil (EC = 7.46 dS m−1). Physio-biochemical attributes (total chlorophyll, carotenoids, K+ and K+/Na+ ratios, performance index and catalase (CAT) activity), growth traits (i.e., shoot length, number and area of leaves plant−1 and shoot dry weight), yield and its components and seed quality (number of pods plant−1, 100-seed weight, seed yield ha−1 and seed protein and oil contents) were significantly decreased when soybean plants were grown in saline soil compared with those grown in normal soil. In contrast, activity of enzymatic antioxidants (i.e., superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX)), contents of non-enzymatic antioxidants and osmoprotectants (i.e., total soluble sugars, free proline, ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol), Na+, Cl−, H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) were increased in soybean plants grown in saline soil compared with normal soil. However, under salt-stressed conditions, potassium applied through SS or FS significantly enhanced all soybean growth, photosynthetic efficiency, K+ content, ratio of K+/Na+ and activity of CAT, SOD, APX and GPX as well as improved yield and quality traits, while potassium application did not affect the contents of non-enzymatic antioxidants and osmoprotectants. For instance, foliar potassium application (FS) increased seed yield ha−1 by 92.31% and protein content by 63.19% compared with the control under the salt stress condition. In addition, both applications of potassium significantly reduced Na+, Cl−, H2O2 and MDA contents in soybean plants compared with those obtained from control treatments. Exogenous application of K2SO4 was more effective than SS at improving soybean physio-biochemical attributes, yield and seed quality traits under soil-salinity stress.

An experiment on rapeseed/mustard genotypes was conducted during 2019-2020 rabi season in vinyl house of Plant Physiology Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur to find out the salt-tolerant genotypes based on the responses of their physiological parameters and yield. Five selected rapeseed/ mustard genotypes (V1= Jun-536, V2 = BJDH-12, V3 = BD-10115, V4 = BARI Sarisha-14, V5 = BD-6950) were tested at three salinity levels (S0= 0, S1= 5 and S2=10 dS m-1). Irrespective of the genotypes, salinity stress showed a negative effect on the measured physiological parameters as well as seed yield. Leaf chlorophyll contents, leaf area, leaf photosynthetic rate and total dry matter (TDM) were reduced due to salinity stress which ultimately affected seed yield irrespective of the genotypes. However, these parameters were less affected by the salinity in V1 and V2 genotypes compared to others. Sodium and potassium ion contents and their ratios (K+/Na+) in leaf tissues were significantly affected by salinity stress. Among the genotypes, V1 and V2 showed higher K+/Na+ ratios in leaf under both the salinity treatments, and that phenomenon indicated their higher tolerance to salinity than the other genotypes. Catalase (CAT), Peroxidase (POD) activity and Malondialdehyde (MDA) content of the genotypes increased due to salinity stress with variability among the genotypes. The higher CAT and POD activity with lower MDA content was found in V1 and V2 genotypes which indicated their better salt tolerance ability compared to others. These genotypes also showed higher seed yield under both the salinity levels (5 and 10 dS m-1) compared to other genotypes. Based on the responses of physiological parameters and seed yield to salinity, the genotypes Jun-536(V1) and BJDH-12(V2) could be considered relatively tolerant to salinity stress. Bangladesh Agron. Aims: To evaluate the effect of K2SO42- application on growth of soybean cultivars besides chemical parameters under salt stress. Study Design: Laid out the experiment in Complete Randomized Design in triplicates. Analyzed the data statistically by using the statistical software Statistix 8.1. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted in Soil Salinity and Bio-saline Research green house and in the laboratory of Land Resources Research Institute at National Agricultural Research Centre, Islamabad (under PARC), Pakistan for three months. Methodology: To study germination parameters under salt stress, NaCl was used @ 0, 100, 120 and 140 mmol L-1. At seedling stage, interactive effect among salt stress (0 and 4.5 dSm-1), potassium sulphate (KS) application @ 10 mmol L-1 and soybean (Cvs. NIBGE-301 and NIGBE-158) was recorded for growth and ion relations. Results: Germination, biomass, bio vigor, mass vigor and sap vigor of the seedlings and ion relations were affected highly significantly (p≤ 0.01). Under interactive effect of KS and salt stress at vegetative stage, Na+/K+ in the plants declined with KS application. Sulphur and phosphorus concentration in the plants changed under the same conditions. Conclusion: Induced salt stress revealed germination, seed bio vigor, seeding mass vigor, and seedling sap vigor seedling and other vegetative parameters of soybean cultivars. Potassium sulphate application revealed genotypes differential response to ion relations and growth under salt stress. NIBGE-301 was more tolerant to salt stress and more responsive to potassium sulphate application than NIGBE-158.
