Effect of scent on comfort of aircraft passengers

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Scents may influence the perceived comfort of an environment. There are only a few studies conducted on the relationship between scent and comfort in aircraft cabin. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this research is to explore whether relationships between scents and perceived comfort can be found for passengers in an aircraft cabin. METHODS: 276 participants joined an experiment in a Boeing 737 fuselage. The participants were divided into nine groups and each joined a session for 60 minutes with the exposu… Show more

“…This represents a fundamental stage in the design process of a cabin environment. Indeed, although other factors influence the emotional state of a passenger, the effect of visual stimulation is undoubtedly one of the most relevant when assessing comfort in an environment 47 , 48 . “…The sample size of respondents in individual surveys varied diametrically from tens of respondents [5,73,77,86,89,92,99] to hundreds of respondents [78][79][80][81]88,90,91,93,94,97,[100][101][102]. The limitation of certain studies was the omission of these data [72,82,87], the selection of respondents, e.g., involving only women in the survey [73,94], or carrying out the survey on a sample of students [86,103]. Another limitation of several types of research was their implementation only in simulated conditions [92,94,103].…”

“…There are only few studies about odors while traveling by plane. In Yao [34] study, they performed experiment on the Boeing 737 passengers and they were exposed on different scents (lavender, cedar, mandarin) and different pressure in the cabin and time of the experiment. The results were made after answering questions after the experiment, which consist different factors like gender, emotions, comfort.…”
